More on Bradley Manning’s Treatment

From this article:

…he was put into an inhumane solitary confinement…

…barred from interaction with other prisoners even during his one hour of “exercise” in an empty room.

On Wednesday, Manning was stripped of his clothes and forced to remain naked in his cell for seven hours. He also was required to stand naked during an inspection.

And from this article:

…Manning was held in solitary confinement and forced nudity. He was classified as a “maximum custody detainee” and held under a “Prevention of Injury” designation for nine months until he was transferred in April 2011. A Prevention of Injury order is just short of suicide watch and means that guards check the cell every five minutes with the prisoner not allowed to sleep during the day. Manning was not allowed to sleep between 5 am (7 am at weekends) and 8 pm, and if he tried to, was made to stand or sit up. At Quantico he was detained in a 6 x 12 foot cell, with no window, and only a bed, toilet and sink. He ate his meals in his cell. Manning could walk outside his cell only while shackled and for only one hour. He was allowed to keep only one book and one magazine in his cell.

Now read a synopsis of the US government manual on brainwashing:

According to the general consensus, the Soviets started a new prisoner off by putting him in solitary confinement. A rotating corps of guards watched him constantly, humiliating and demeaning him at every opportunity and making it clear he was totally cut off from all outside support. The guards ordered him to stand for long periods, let him sit, told him exactly the position he could take to lie down, and woke him if he moved in the slightest while sleeping. They banned all outside stimuli—books, conversation, or news of the world.

It wasn’t punitive. It was brainwashing. But why brainwash someone you think is already guilty? They either want him to believe something that he doesn’t or forget something he saw or heard.

Bonus quote:

Their [Wolff and Hinkle’s] secret report to Allen Dulles, later published in a declassified version, was considered the definitive U.S. Government work on the subject. In fact, if allowances are made for the Cold War rhetoric of the fifties, the Wolff-Hinkle report still remains one of the better accounts of the massive political re-education programs in China and the Soviet Union. It stated flatly that neither the Soviets nor the Chinese had any magical weapons—no drugs, exotic mental ray-guns, or other fanciful machines. Instead, the report pictured communist interrogation methods resting on skillful, if brutal, application of police methods. Its portrait of the Soviet system anticipates, in dry and scholarly form, the work of novelist Alexander Solzhenitzyn in The Gulag Archipelago. Hinkle and Wolff showed that the Soviet technique rested on the cumulative weight of intense psychological pressure and human weakness, and this thesis alone earned the two Cornell doctors the enmity of the more right-wing CIA officials such as Edward Hunter. Several of his former acquaintances remember that Hunter was fond of saying that the Soviets brainwashed people the way Pavlov had conditioned dogs.

Included for humor. That the CIA, the agency charged with finding the truth, sometimes takes offense when someone points it out to them and it doesn’t fit with their preconceived notions, is ironic (see 2A and 2B).

(Note: That 1979 book, The Search for the Manchurian Candidate by John Marks, has been added to the links at right. I also added Sleeping With the Devil: How Washington Sold Our Soul for Saudi Crude since that’s what the majority of this is about, as well as keeping mercenaries and contractors in the style in which they are accustomed, and not the safety and security of the 99%.)

DRAFT

[deletion]

5 May 1955

A portion of the Research and Development Program of TSS/Chemical Division is devoted to the discovery of the following materials and methods:

1. Substances which will promote illogical thinking and impulsiveness to the point where the recipient would be discredited in public.

2. Substances which increase the efficiency of mentation and perception.

3. Materials which will prevent or counteract the intoxicating effect of alcohol.

4. Materials which will promote the intoxicating effect of alcohol.

5. Materials which will produce the signs and symptoms of recognized diseases in a reversible way so that they may be used for malingering, etc.

6. Materials which will render the induction of hypnosis easier or otherwise enhance its usefulness.

7. Substances which will enhance the ability of individuals to withstand privation, torture and coercion during interrogation and so-called “brain-washing”.

8. Materials and physical methods which will produce amnesia for events preceding and during their use.

9. Physical methods of producing shock and confusion over extended periods of time and capable of surreptitious use.

10. Substances which produce physical disablement such as paralysis of the legs, acute anemia, etc.

11. Substances which will produce “pure” euphoria with no subsequent let-down.

12. Substances which alter personality structure in such a way that the tendency of the recipient to become dependent upon another person is enhanced.

13. A material which will cause mental confusion of such a type that the individual under its influence will find it difficult to maintain a fabrication under questioning.

14. Substances which will lower the ambition and general working efficiency of men when administered in undetectable amounts.

15. Substances which promote weakness or distortion of the eyesight or hearing faculties, preferably without permanent effects.

16. A knockout pill which can surreptitiously be administered in drinks, food, cigarettes, as an aerosol, etc., which will be safe to use, provide a maximum of amnesia, and be suitable for use by agent types on an ad hoc basis.

17. A material which can be surreptitiously administered by the above routes and which in very small amounts will make it impossible for a man to perform any physical activity whatsoever.

The development of materials of this type follows the standard practice of such ethical drug houses as [deletion] It is a relatively routine procedure to develop a drug to the point of human testing. Ordinarily, the drug houses depend upon the services of private physicians for the final clinical testing. The physicians are willing to assume the responsibility of such tests in order to advance the science of medicine. It is difficult and sometimes impossible for TSS/CD to offer such an inducement with respect to its products. In practice, it has been possible to use outside cleared contractors for the preliminary phases of this work. However, that part which involves human testing at effective dose levels presents security problems which cannot be handled by the ordinary contractor.

The proposed facility [deletion] offers a unique opportunity for the secure handling of such clinical testing in addition to the many advantages outlined in the project proposal. The security problems mentioned above are eliminated by the fact that the responsibility for the testing will rest completely upon the physician and the hospital. [one line deleted] will allow TSS/CD personnel to supervise the work very closely to make sure that all tests are conducted according to the recognized practices and embody adequate safeguards.

Added CIA Family Jewels page from the National Security Archives so people can see what the CIA did. They spied on journalists, they tested drugs on unwitting US citizens, they harassed groups attempting to address grievances with their government and otherwise express First Amendment Rights as provided for in the basis for our entire system, the Constitution. Today, this is a violation of the law specifically called Conspiracy Against Rights. If you are a victim of stalking or harassment by unknown parties (especially if it seems as though it’s the police or other local or state authorities involved), write to the Inspector General of the CIA and to the FBI tip line. Public pressure is the only way to get this stopped and, really, if I’m correct (and I am), democracy itself is at stake. Do it.

And, finally, added a link to information on Curveball (also at the National Security Archives), a liar who was used to justify the invasion of Iraq (which has cost US taxpayers trillions of dollars, much of which has gone to private corporations, just as Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned could happen when he left office).

Added after posting this: National Security Archives page on Operation Northwoods, how the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon planned to fake a terror attack on US soil in order to justify invading Cuba. Did that make any eyebrows pop up?

Explosive

You really need to read it. Covers many of the bases, including lies about the effectiveness of torture, who knew what when in Plamegate, the planning behind the invasion of Iraq and neocon disdain for what they considered to be phony debate in Congress that had no effect on their decision to go. The interviewee was indicted today with what appears to be revenge or coverup kinda things. Time will tell.

A Crime Trauma

Read something like this in a summary article years ago: a significant childhood trauma tends to make one turn out conservative later in life. Unsure if more extreme trauma (eg, torture) can influence that later in life as a teenager or adult.

More specifically and recently, this study states that childhood trauma tends to make a person less open to new experiences and that being more open to them tends to align with being liberal (therefore the less open tend the other way).

Could rounding up large numbers of young people, traumatizing them then lead to a movement toward a country that has, if not a majority, at least a radically militant and vocal minority, who lean conservative? It might if it were carried out long enough and the trauma severe enough. (Heck, that’s how the Taliban came to be, largely made up of abused orphans.)

—–

Additionally, you of course need to kill secular education wherever you see it (also like the Taliban destruction of historical sites and opposing viewpoints). For example, you cut education funding, funneling what’s left in the budget as much as possible to the contractors you helped to get hired to provide, for example, meals lacking nutrition but profitable, soda and candy machines. Happily, the sugar and caffeine help to cause discipline problems which lead to more contracts for security and for prescription drugs, which you also have an interest in.

At that point, you have two paths to an obedient group that agrees with you in gutting education and social services in favor of wars on resource-rich countries. You re-write the history of the founding of the country substituting your fictional characters for the very flawed real ones, pervert the meaning of the Constitution as you do anything that poses a threat to your power snatch. And your rabble don’t know better because their education wasn’t what it could have been and they won’t ask because you’ve created an atmosphere where they think they have to behave even more radical than you or they aren’t “real” Americans.

Then you make people crazy about immigration, build up borders to prevent labor-minded Latinos from coming in and “ruining” your phony narrative of a warlike corporate-loving, edumacation-hating blue collar band of radicals in the majority who equate murdering the “other” with being American, being patriotic. But never suggesting that paying taxes is. It’s all about having brown skin, but you only hint at that and blame political correctness for your inability to express your real, racist feelings. (You also benefit by making it a hassle for little old ladies to go get their meds on discount up in Canada so your big pharma friends can gouge them with US prices and drive their insurance costs up raking in more bucks for your business friends that way).

Of course, you also arm and stir up the drug dealers causing the all trouble that you point to as a problem requiring the border vigilantism while profiting off of the drug trade and the ensuing contracts to “protect” us from the treat you helped create. You are a terorrist, in a way.

To keep the gullible and superstitious from calling foul, you perform some “magic tricks.” When your top-heavy-favoring policies cause real damage due to neglect of infrastructure such as levees left insufficient by outsourcing meeting up with climate change hurricanes, you cause a diversion and blame someone else’s lack of radicalism as the cause, deserving “punishment” from your violent god or that it’s just the way of nature, why didn’t those people move? You get some televangelists and pundits to say these things on television.

You have people going “postal” and shooting things and other people or planning to blow things up. You accomplish this via drugs, psychological conditioning, and electronics that your average Joe Citizen doesn’t even know exists, all based on reasearch begun in the early 40s continuing for over seventy years and the acquisescence of anyone who would or should provide oversight. You blame a mostly fictional leftwing radicalism and not the 21st century “dark ages” that as leaders you have access to and the means to keep it out of public discourse, the collective conscious.

Or by finding people too mentally deficient to say no to your hired undercover informants’ pressure. When it’s revealed that you “stopped” another attack, you pat yourself on the back and wait for additional funding, for the adulation of the politicians who put you up to it to create that climate of fear that they thrive in.

Then you create seemingly random events that can be explained as some growing threat or the almighty’s wrath: the answer is in the eye of the beholder and either lie points only to your policies as the answer. You provide a few false choices, forcing one or one of the others and they all lead to your exaltation, your “genius” as the only one with the answers that always seem to point to punishing some other group of people.

But it never points to the true source of the problems: corrupt bureaucrats, crooked politicians and the special business interests who get paid with tax dollars and bailouts to carry out the research, to perform the dirty work of robbing Americans, and then reward you with a high-paying job in the private sector, stock value increases, or kickbacks. You use them, these mercenaries and corporate monstrosities as a way of keeping yet another degree of separation between you, the sock-puppets they set off on rampages, and the victims. It becomes impossible to tell who is the parasite, who the host. You have become one, one thing: a corporatist that only looks after other corporatists and seeks to draw more and more of the “other” into itself. You are a clear example of what you publicly denounce: evolution. Darwinism. That it is of the socio-economic variety makes no difference. You are a predator and anything not corporatist is prey or threat.

Anyone who get in the way, questions, says “Wait a minute” just gets poison-penned, put on a watch list, harassed by overzealous, unthinking “soldiers” in your secret police force, and, if they can manage to pull it off, murdered, You dress it up as “national security” internally, an “accident” externally.

The real fiction is the propaganda that you pay to have put on television: that soldiers you sent in long wars would never lack honor enough to defile the corpse of a vanquished foe; that no cop would break the skull of a soldier; that the “secret police” is merely concerned with protecting average citizens and therefore it’s okay to break the law in the course of doing so. And when the law is actually broken, you have the made-to-order excuse waiting: whoever they violated without a search warrant and probable cause must have deserved it, so it’s okay. And it’s not that these organizations only actually care about protecting the corporate raiders who stole the homes and savings from those very same citizens you dupe with the make-believe heroes brought Into their homes weekly; that the “good people” in the government AND corporate America would never stoop as low as they actually have.

The truth is so over-the-top, it’s practically unbelievable. But that’s something that you count on. More than anything, you create the illusion of justice when everything else, everything that you don’t control, says that the exact opposite is true.

It sounds like a really unbelievable piece of fiction. Or something straight out of one of those corporate conservative think-tanks. Or the dangerously radical and corrupt “thinkers” within the Pentagon and the CIA.

In a way, I suppose it’s all three.

Disguised as Angels of Light

McClatchy DC:

The Mormon church has revealed in a campaign filing that the church spent nearly $190,000 to help pass Proposition 8, the November ballot measure that banned gay marriage in California.

The disclosure comes amid an investigation by the state’s campaign watchdog agency into whether the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints violated state laws by not fully disclosing its involvement during the campaign.

While many church members had donated directly to the Yes on 8 campaign – some estimates of Mormon giving range as high as $20 million – the church itself had previously reported little direct campaign activity.

But in the filing made Friday, the Mormon church reported thousands in travel expenses, such as airline tickets, hotel rooms and car rentals for the campaign. The church also reported $96,849.31 worth of “compensated staff time” – hours that church employees spent working to pass the same-sex marriage ban.

And:

CIA connection to LDS

Can’t find many of those quoted periodicals online anymore. There was also a few NYTimes articles about the inordinate number of Mormons recruited in the 80s by CIA around the same time as the car bombings in SLC. This was not only for cover (they were often in missionary positions), but the willingness to follow orders without question from having been indoctrinated to do the same by the church and the hilariously misguided belief that they were beyond corruption. (When you always follow orders without question, you are by definition corrupt. It’s not moral fortitude nor is it patriotism to blindly follow unjust leaders and to perform illegal acts, that’s prostituting one’s beliefs, exchanging them for a lie, for someone else’s fiancial gain).

(Mind you, I’ve known mormons and found them to be nice people on the whole. Heck, it was a mormon taught me and my friends to play D&D as a twelve year old. It’s these other kinds, these dangerously radical sorts who are willing to do anything to subvert democracy and civil rights–which is what made the USA special in the world–that give the rest a bad name. They’re no different from any other group of militant religious zealots whether it’s Timothy McVeigh or the Iranian government executing teenagers for being in love with each other.)

When you couple things like the systemic torture of American teenagers through the Worldwide Specialty Schools system (to provide the military industrial complex with sociopaths) (See what I mean? Hypocrites.. Yeah, okay, I guess they’re consistent on torture; doesn’t matter who it is) with the kidnapping and sale of American toddlers to foreign countries (to keep the mammon-oil flowing) that you know you’ve got a group of diabolical deviants all dressed up in nonmagical undergarments.

Yes, hypocrites. especially in light of what they did towards the end of 2010 using voice-to-skull: “talked” five kids into suicide in two three weeks. Unforgivable. And letting me know that they did that: really, really stupid. Following orders without question. It’s not loose association here, folks. It’s their psychological background and history pointing to dirty deeds that seem unthinkable to most of us but which make sense when you’re one of those who think you know that God wants you to kill for him.

It’s times like these when you think things you never thought you would. Like, “Go, Newt.” Hey, it’s the lesser of two weasels.
