BBD – Globally, Locally

Mostly a general update to things already covered under the Squidgate and more general Black Boot Diaries tabs.

First, somewhere…deep in the bowels of this blog…is a post or more about the fact that the Squidgate juror’s son was hit by a car in January of 2009 under circumstances bizarrely similar to the ones in which my son was hit by a car in 2004. The new detail here, on 29 January 2009, the Squidgate juror’s son was stopped while walking along the same route to or from school that would find him struck by a vehicle the very next day. The cop told him that he should not be walking against traffic but rather with traffic.

Now, it’s been a long time since I’ve been in grades K through 3 or so, but I recall being told to walk against traffic so that one can see what is coming, make eye contact with drivers or note if a driver doesn’t see you so you can jump in a ditch or whatever is convenient. The fact that he obliged this cop’s order contributed greatly to his being hit the next day. He told the different police after he got hit about that and he thinks that this may have been the straw that broke that cop’s pile-of-reasons-to-be-let-go-camel’s back.

Still, weird when law enforcement goes all funny in the head like that. Though it does to an extent seem to be becoming the norm. Let’s also recall the situation in Minneapolis that I described here in option #1 and of course the situations that seem to occur often enough all over the place.

What I did not know when I wrote the blog post{s} referencing this was that the Squidgate juror’s husband had blown the whistle before the airport troubles. * That time he did not seem to be intending to do so, was merely answering a question by some state auditor about the wage rate he was receiving on a state contract. In other words, his employer was lying to the State of Michigan about what he was paying his employees. This resulted in the contractor paying his employees the rate at which he was billing the State of Michigan.

* Speaking of which…

Mark Hicks, “1 dead in plane crash near St. Clair County airport,” Detroit News, 24 December 2014:

The Canadian pilot of a small plane died in a crash while trying to land at St. Clair County International Airport on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The Watford, Ontario, man had been flying in a twin Piper Seneca to the airport, where he kept the plane, St. Clair County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Campau said.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m., the pilot used the instrument landing system through Selfridge Air National Guard Base to say he had missed his approach, then the plane dropped off radar, Campau said.

An airport worker contacted county officials, who broadcast an alert. Authorities and Kimball Township firefighters began searching the area.

About 5:30 p.m., they tracked a signal from the plane’s emergency locator transmitter to a field in a wooded area north of the airport, behind a residence in the 500 block of Allen Road, Campau said.

The pilot — the only person on board — was declared dead at the scene, he said. His name was not released Wednesday night.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified and was expected to start an investigation Thursday.
